Roadway Play Areas?

-- from June 1999 issue of CCA's The "Ten" Times Newsletter

During this time of year, we get many questions about the advisability of allowing day care children to ride bikes, skate or play on the street by the day care home. Sometimes these streets are cul-de-sacs with little traffic. We know that providers get a lot of pressure from children and even parents to engage in these activities. However, the Family Day Care regulations do not permit the use of potentially dangerous spaces. Since public roadways are available to delivery trucks, emergency vehicles, and all other vehicles, we can not approve them for outdoor play space. (Regulation .18B: Space Required: the provider will have ample accessible space for outdoor activity free from dangerous conditions.)
